R.E.A.L. Healthy Program
Project Description:
Through this project we provide families in Riverside County, California with simple and affordable strategies and solutions to live better, healthier lives.
The Need:
Risk-reducible ailments, particularly cardiovascular diseases, continue to exist as the leading causes of hospitalization and death in Riverside, California. This creates added strain on our economy, results in decreased workforce productivity, and leads to overcrowding at hospitals and medical centers. Through simple solutions in nutrition and physical activity and changes in attitudes and motivation related to both these areas, risk of heart disease and other medical conditions, can be significantly reduced.
Health Course:
We will offer a 5-week course for adults featuring simple and cost-effective ways to build healthier lives for them and their families. Each course will include a cooking demonstration, lessons on simple ways to live healthier on a budget, live group fitness activities, and personal planning and goal setting assistance.
Campbell’s “Let’s CAN Hunger” Challenge
As part of this challenge to all SIFE Teams in the United States, we are working to collect 5,000 cans/lbs/dollars to support local food collection efforts and raise community awareness in issues of hunger and healthy living. We are meeting this challenge with one of our largest events undertaken by our team, the 5 Can 5k.
5 Can 5k Run
We are organizing a 5k run/walk to be held this Spring to support our work in the other components of this projects, and to increase the reach of our education and awareness efforts. This event will also include a “Healthy Living” fair, featuring a number of local health-related services and opportunities available to members of the community, including hospitals, gyms, grocery stores, community centers, and more.
